Dog vaccination cost in 2026 runs about $305 for a full puppy series at a nonprofit vaccine clinic and about $740 at a private animal hospital that charges an exam at each of the four visits. After that, an adult averages $94 to $209 a year for the same shots. The gap isn’t the vaccines so much as the visit: a $95.50 wellness exam can cost more than the two shots given during it. A vaccination is a dose of killed or weakened germ (or a piece of one) that builds immunity to the real disease before your pet meets it.

Pick the life stage, the lifestyle shots your vet recommends and the kind of clinic. The calculator counts doses and visits from the 2022 AAHA schedule, prices them from one private hospital's and one nonprofit clinic's posted 2026 fees, and shows what an average adult year costs over a three-year booster cycle.
Estimated Vaccine Bill
Estimates only. Dose counts follow the 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines; prices are one Wisconsin private hospital's February 2026 list and one Pennsylvania nonprofit clinic's June 2026 list, with regional factors from a hospital chain's city prices. Your vet decides which vaccines your pet needs. Reviewed September 2026.
Private hospital prices come from Gentle Vet Animal Hospital in Green Bay, Wisconsin (February 2026). Low-cost prices come from the Humane Animal Rescue vaccine clinic in Pittsburgh (June 2026).
What Each Shot Costs at a Private Vet vs a Low-Cost Clinic
Per shot, a full-service hospital charged 1.2 to 2.1 times the nonprofit price in the two lists we compared. Then the exam lands on top.
| Vaccine | Type | Private hospital | Nonprofit clinic | How often (adult) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DAPP (DHPP) | Core | $46.10 | $27 | Every 3 years |
| Rabies | Core, often required by law | $44.00 | $21 | 1 or 3 years, by state law |
| Leptospirosis | Lifestyle | $46.10 | $32 | Yearly |
| Bordetella (kennel cough) | Lifestyle | $37.00 | $24 | Yearly |
| Lyme | Lifestyle | $56.50 | $36 | Yearly |
| Canine influenza | Lifestyle | $62.75 | $51 | Yearly |
| Exam or visit fee | $95.50 per exam | $22 per visit | Each visit |
The nonprofit’s $22 is a $14 technician fee plus an $8 biohazard fee, and there’s no physical exam. Its packages trim a little more: $69 for rabies, DHPP and Bordetella (list $72) or $135 when Lyme and leptospirosis are added (list $140). The calculator uses list prices, so a package can beat its figure by $3 to $5.
Core and Lifestyle Vaccines: What AAHA Says Your Pup Needs
Core vaccines are the ones every dog should get regardless of where it lives: DAPP, which covers distemper, adenovirus (canine hepatitis), parvovirus and parainfluenza, plus rabies. Everything else is a lifestyle, or non-core, vaccine your veterinarian adds based on exposure.
- Leptospirosis. A bacterial disease spread through wildlife and rodent urine and contaminated water. AAHA says most dogs in North America should be considered at risk, and some task force members wanted it made core. The calculator ticks it by default.
- Bordetella. The main kennel cough vaccine. Boarding kennels, groomers and daycares usually require it, so it’s on by default too.
- Lyme. Worth it where ticks carry the disease. AAHA lists Connecticut (15.5 percent of tested dogs positive), Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin and nine other states plus DC at 5 percent or more.
- Canine influenza. AAHA doesn’t recommend it for every dog, only for those at daycare, boarding, dog parks, shows or traveling. The bivalent version (H3N2 and H3N8) is preferred.
Rabies is the one shot required by law in many states and counties, and your state or county sets whether a 1-year or 3-year product is accepted. That single rule changes what the quiet years cost.
How the Calculator Counts Doses and Visits
The price build-up follows the AAHA vaccination schedule, visit by visit.
- Puppy visits. The first visit is at the age you enter. AAHA calls for DAPP every 2 to 4 weeks until the puppy is older than 16 weeks; the calculator uses 3 weeks. Starting at 8 weeks gives visits at 8, 11, 14 and 17 weeks. Starting at 6 weeks adds a fifth; starting at 12 cuts it to three.
- Doses per vaccine. Rabies is one dose at 12 weeks or later. Leptospirosis, Lyme and influenza each need two doses 2 to 4 weeks apart, then one a year. Intranasal Bordetella is one dose, then yearly. These ride along on the puppy visits, so no extra trips.
- Adult years. After the one-year booster, AAHA puts DAPP on a 3-year cycle. A core year includes DAPP and rabies; an in-between year carries only the yearly shots, plus rabies if your clinic uses the 1-year product.
- Visit fees. Private hospital: $95.50 per exam, at every visit or only the first, your choice. Nonprofit: $22 per visit.
- Region. Private prices are multiplied by 1.22 in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1.09 in New York, Boston, Seattle or Washington DC, and 0.96 in lower-cost areas. Those factors come from one national chain’s city-by-city shot prices.
The “average adult year” line adds one core year to two in-between years and divides by three. That’s the number to put in a yearly budget.
Four Vaccine Bills Worked Out
Each case below uses the exact inputs you can type into the calculator, and each total is locked into its test suite.
An 8-week puppy at a private hospital
Defaults: leptospirosis and Bordetella ticked, typical-cost city, exam at every visit. Vaccines come to $357.60 (four DAPP at $46.10, rabies $44, two lepto $92.20, Bordetella $37). Four exams add $382. Total: $740. If the clinic charges the exam only at the first visit, it drops to $453. The adult years that follow average $209.
The same puppy at a nonprofit clinic
Four DAPP at $27, rabies $21, two lepto at $32 and Bordetella $24 make $217 in vaccines. Four visits at $22 add $88. Total: $305, which is $435 less. Adult years average $94 here: $126 in a core year and $78 in each in-between year.
A core booster year in Boston with Lyme
An adult due for DAPP and rabies, plus lepto, Bordetella and Lyme, at a private hospital in a high-cost metro. Shots and exam total $325.20 before the 1.09 regional factor, so $354. The two in-between years run $256 each, putting the average adult year at $289. The same shots at the nonprofit cost $162.
A rescue with no shot records
An adult with unknown history gets two DAPP doses about 3 weeks apart, one rabies, and here two lepto, one Bordetella and two influenza doses for daycare. At the nonprofit that’s $265 in vaccines and $44 in visit fees: $309. A typical private hospital would charge $582 for the same plan.
Why Dog Vaccination Cost Swings by Hundreds
Four inputs do most of the work, roughly in this order.
- Exam fees. On a puppy series at a private hospital, exams were $382 of the $740 total. Ask whether booster visits are a full exam or a shorter technician appointment. That one answer is worth up to $287 on a four-visit series.
- Clinic type. Per-shot prices at the nonprofit ran 19 to 52 percent below the private list, and there’s no exam.
- Lifestyle picks. Influenza is the priciest add-on at $62.75 per dose privately, and it needs two doses in the first year. Lyme adds $56.50 a year.
- Rabies interval. With a 1-year rabies product, the average adult year at a typical private hospital rises from $209 to $238, because rabies moves into every visit.
Region moved the shot price less than clinic type did. At the same hospital chain, a DAPP booster cost $41.46 in San Francisco and $34.11 in Houston, a 22 percent spread. That’s one chain’s pricing, so an independent practice near you may sit outside it.
Where This Estimate Misses
The calculator prices the vaccines and the visit. Real invoices often carry more:
- Tests added to the same visit. A 4Dx heartworm and tick-disease test was $82.50 and a fecal exam $53.50 on the same private list. Many hospitals bundle them into the yearly wellness visit.
- Parasite prevention and deworming. Often sold at vaccine visits, and not included here.
- A slower puppy schedule. A vet using 2-week gaps, or pushing the last DAPP to 18 to 20 weeks in a high-parvo area, adds a visit.
- Wellness plans. A monthly plan that bundles exams and shots can come in under the private figure. Compare its yearly price to the calculator’s before signing.
- Titer testing. Some owners check antibody levels instead of boostering. That’s a lab fee this estimate doesn’t model.
Start by calling two clinics near you with the calculator’s dose list in hand and asking for a written estimate. If the private quote runs well above ours, ask which visits are full exams. Questions Owners Ask About Shot Prices
How much is a full set of puppy shots?
About $305 at a nonprofit clinic and $740 at a private hospital that examines the puppy at all four visits, for DAPP, rabies, leptospirosis and Bordetella. Skipping the repeat exams brings the private total to about $453.
Are yearly vaccines really necessary?
Not all of them. AAHA puts DAPP on a 3-year cycle after the one-year booster. Leptospirosis, Lyme, Bordetella and influenza stay yearly under the same guidelines, and rabies follows your local law.
How much does it cost to vaccinate an adult every year?
Averaged over a 3-year cycle, about $94 a year at a nonprofit clinic and $209 at a typical private hospital, with lepto and Bordetella. Lyme in a high-cost metro pushes the private figure to about $289.
Why is the rabies shot cheaper at a vaccine clinic?
Nonprofit vaccine clinics skip the full physical exam and post flat per-shot prices. Rabies was $21 at the Pittsburgh nonprofit and $44 at the Wisconsin hospital, before the $95.50 exam.
Does pet insurance pay for vaccines?
Standard accident and illness policies don’t. Wellness add-ons and hospital wellness plans do, for a monthly fee. They pay off only when the yearly cost is below your dog vaccination cost from the calculator.
