Syrian hamster running on a wide silent wheel in deep bedding, a core part of hamster setup cost

Hamster Cost (Setup and Monthly)

A realistic hamster setup cost runs from about $88 for a pet store starter kit to $322 for a 75-gallon glass tank with a screen lid, a silent wheel and two bags of bedding. The pet itself is $10 to $20 at a store. After setup, expect $25 to $51 a month, and most of the swing comes from one line: bedding. A deep layer in a big cage takes six times the paper that a starter kit does, so the cage you pick sets both bills.

Choose the species, the cage and how deep you’ll fill it. The estimator prices each item, converts floor space and depth into liters of substrate, and turns your cleaning schedule into a monthly figure. It covers the initial cost and the annual costs of owning a hamster, so you can plan both before you bring a new pet home.

Pick a species, an enclosure and a bedding depth. The estimator prices the one-time setup from 2026 store prices, works out how many liters of bedding the floor space and depth take, and turns your cleaning schedule, food, chews and a vet check-up into a monthly and first-year figure.

The Hamster

The animal is the cheapest line. Species sets the floor space it needs.

Species
The store tag or adoption card names the species. Syrians grow larger and must live alone.
Each one is priced with its own enclosure.
Enclosure and Wheel

Floor space drives both the enclosure price and how much bedding every change takes.

Floor space is the inside length times width of the base, in inches.
PetSmart: at least 10 to 11 inches across for a Syrian, 8 inches for a dwarf.
Bedding and Care

Bedding is the monthly line that moves most. It scales with floor space, depth and how often you replace it.

Kit, Bin or Tank: What Hamster Cages Cost

Floor space is the unbroken area of the base, inside length times inside width. It decides whether a hamster has room to run and burrow, and it multiplies every bag you’ll ever buy.

The kit includes a small wheel, a water bottle, a food bowl, a chew toy, shelves and ramps, which is why it looks cheap next to a bare tank. It’s also a quarter of the space a veterinarian recommends for a Syrian, so it is not a suitable long-term home for one. The bin is the budget route that PetMD itself suggests: a clear storage tub with its lid cut out and replaced with wire mesh or window screen, held with zip ties. Pasadena Humane, an animal shelter, publishes a DIY build sheet that asks for a 40 to 75 gallon bin and 5 to 6 inches of clearance above the substrate. The tank’s 48 x 18 inch base clears PetSmart’s 800 sq in guideline, and Petco has sold it at half price during its aquarium sales. PetMD prefers a tank base because it holds more substrate: “The best hamster cages have a tank base and a wire top.”

How Much Floor Space and Bedding Does a Hamster Need?

PetMD files hamsters under exotic pets, and in its cage guide Teresa Manucy, DVM, sets the minimum at 900 square inches (40 x 22.5) for a Syrian and 700 (40 x 17.5) for a dwarf hamster or Chinese hamster. PetSmart’s small pet guide, “Hamster Habitat Setup: Everything You Need,” is looser: about 800 for a Syrian and 350 to 450 for a dwarf. The Hamster Care Wiki, a keeper-run reference, puts every species at 775 or more and notes fewer stress behaviors in Syrians given over 1,000.

  • Depth. PetSmart calls 6 inches the minimum and 8 to 12 inches in at least part of the cage better. PetMD says at least 10 inches is ideal for larger animals, which gives them room to burrow.
  • Hamster wheel. At least 10 to 11 inches across for a Syrian and 8 inches for a dwarf, per PetSmart.
  • Nesting material. The RSPCA suggests hay, wood wool, shredded paper or cardboard for the nest, and advises against fluffy cotton wool types.
  • Company. Syrians “should not live together,” PetMD says, so plan to house one per cage; dwarfs live alone or as a pair. The RSPCA describes hamsters as solitary and sometimes aggressive to each other.
  • Top. Wire or mesh with gaps of 1/2 inch or less over a deep plastic or glass base.

Our reading of those numbers: the size guidance is what separates a $56 kit from a $205 tank, not the brand on the box. We recommend buying for floor space first and accessories second.

From Floor Space to Liters: The Bedding Math

  1. Volume of one fill. Floor space (sq in) x depth (in) x 0.016387 gives liters. A 75-gallon tank at 8 inches holds 864 x 8 = 6,912 cubic inches, or 113.3 liters.
  2. Bags per fill. Divide by the expanded liters on the bag. At 85 L that’s 1.33 bags, so setup buys two.
  3. Changes per month. 30.44 days divided by the days between full changes. Every 4 weeks is 1.09 changes a month; every 2 weeks, 2.17.
  4. Monthly cost. Bags per fill x price per bag x changes per month. At $23.99 a bag: 1.33 x $23.99 x 1.09 = $34.75.
  5. Setup. Cage and lid, wheel, a water bottle, dish, and hides or a tunnel ($28.50 unless the kit supplies them), a first bag of food ($7.50) and the whole bags for the first fill.
  6. Yearly care. Twelve months of bedding, food ($50 to $80), chews and toys ($20 to $50), and a $35 check-up if ticked. Year one subtracts one fill because setup already bought it.

Four Setups Priced Line by Line

1. A Syrian in a 75-gallon tank

$16 for the hamster. Setup: $145 tank, $59.88 lid, $32.99 silent wheel, $28.50 accessories, $7.50 food, $47.98 for two bags. Total $322. With an 8 inch layer replaced every 4 weeks, care is $46.00 a month, $34.75 of it bedding. First year $858, two years $1,410. Bought in a half-price sale, the setup drops to $249.

2. A dwarf hamster in a starter kit bought on sale

$12.50 for the hamster, $56.24 for the kit, $7.50 for food and one $23.99 bag: $88 to set up. Six inches of substrate in 230 sq in is only 22.6 liters, so even changed every 2 weeks it costs $13.88 a month. Care $25.13 a month; first year $395. The cheapest line on this page, at 33 percent of PetMD’s dwarf minimum.

3. A Syrian in a 200 quart bin on a budget

$16 for the hamster, $49.98 for the bin, a $10 basic wheel, $28.50 in accessories, $7.50 of food and two bags: $144. Ten inches of paper over 690 sq in takes 113.1 liters, nearly the same as the tank at 8 inches, so bedding still costs $34.69 a month. Care $43.44 a month on budget food; first year $649. The bin reaches 77 percent of the Syrian minimum but 99 percent of the dwarf figure.

4. A rehomed dwarf with premium care

A free hamster, a sale tank ($72.50 plus the $59.88 lid) and a silent wheel: $249 to set up. Ten inches is 141.6 liters a fill, but changing it every 6 weeks holds bedding to $28.96 a month. Premium food and chews, the check-up and a $100 emergency fund bring care to $51.04 a month. First year $822, two years $1,434.

What Moves the Monthly Bill

Change frequency beats everything else. Example 1 changed every 2 weeks instead of 4 doubles bedding to $69.51 a month and pushes care to $80.76. Depth is next: the same tank at 10 inches costs $43.44 a month, at 6 inches $26.07.

Food barely registers. The Vet Desk’s January 2026 guide puts it at $50 to $80 a year, about $4 to $7 a month. Its own “$30 to $40 monthly” sits close to example 1’s $46, and bedding is three quarters of that. PetSmart suggests a full clean every 2 to 4 weeks with daily spot cleaning, and the RSPCA says a deep clean once or twice a month is usually enough. Keepers who spot clean well and remove only soiled bedding can stretch the interval, which is what the “every N weeks” field is for.

Where These Numbers Can Be Off

  • Bin sizes vary. Storage bins taper toward the base, and 690 sq in comes from one owner’s 200 quart Sterilite. Measure the inside floor and use the custom option.
  • Veterinary care. The Vet Desk lists emergencies at $35 to $300 or more and medications from $120. A hamster aged 1.5 is already elderly per PetMD, so late-life care bills come fast.
  • Lid materials. The mesh, zip ties or staples for a bin lid aren’t priced.
  • Brand. PetSmart lists carefresh bags at $12.99 to $18.99. Divide any bag’s price by its expanded liters, or enter your own price and size.
  • Kit extras. The starter kit ships with some bedding; the listing doesn’t say how much, so we still price one bag.

Start by measuring the space where the cage will sit, then price a tank or bin that meets the 900 or 700 sq in minimum before you adopt or buy the animal. Run the calculator at the depth you plan to keep and at a 2-week and 4-week change interval, and budget from the higher figure. That pairing, floor space and depth, is the real hamster setup cost, and it sets the monthly bill too. If you’re weighing other small pets, compare the leopard gecko budget, see what a glass tank weighs and holds with the tank volume calculator, and check emergency vet prices and pet insurance quotes before something goes wrong.

Hamster Budget Questions

How much does it cost to set up a hamster?

$88 to $322 in our four examples. A PetSmart starter kit on sale with one bag of bedding is the low end; a 75-gallon tank with a screen lid, silent wheel and accessories at full price is the high end. A 200 quart bin setup lands near $144.

How much does a hamster cost per month?

About $25 to $51 once set up, including bedding, food, chews and a $35 yearly check-up spread over 12 months. Bedding is the biggest share and grows with floor space, depth and how often you replace it.

How much is a hamster at PetSmart?

Roughly $12 to $20 for a Syrian and $10 to $15 for a dwarf, per ThePricer’s roundup of PetSmart prices. The Vet Desk puts breeders at $5 to $20 and adoption or pet store prices at $5 to $50, and rehomed hamsters are often free.

Can two hamsters share one enclosure to save money?

Not Syrians; PetMD says they should not live together. Dwarfs can live in pairs with enough space. Two Syrians at the example 1 settings need two setups: $644 up front and $1,716 for the first year.

How long will I be paying for a hamster?

PetMD gives Syrians 2 to 3 years and dwarfs 1 to 3. At example 1 settings, two years comes to $1,410 including the hamster setup cost.
